You Deserve a Clean(er) Start in 2021

Clean Up for 2021

Are you overwhelmed and feeling like so many parts of your life are a mess right now?

If you do, you’re not alone.

The list can be pretty long. How many of these can you relate to?

  • Your workout routine is out of sorts.
  • You’ve gained the Covid 15.
  • Comfort food has become a source of, well, comfort.
  • You’ve lost loved ones.
  • You or someone in your family has lost source of income.
  • You’re dealing with loneliness.
  • You’re struggling with some degree of hopelessness.
  • You’ve lost your energy for progress or productivity.
  • You’re tired of this whole thing.
  • Your depression or anxiety—or both—have intensified.
  • You have kids or grandkids underfoot.
  • Your makeshift work-from-home space has become uncomfortable.
  • You have Zoom fatigue.
  • Tension in one or more of your family relationships has intensified.
  • You’re mourning the loss of a dream.
  • The news is adding to your fatigue.

So much may feel out of your control right now. And this can intensify emotions you might rather leave behind. So, what are you to do?

I would like to encourage you to give thought to some things you can control. Life is multi-faceted, and with all of the things we can feel out of sorts about, I feel confident each one of us can find some things to clean up.

When we clean some things up, we feel better.

A few days ago, as I was zipping through dozens of emails across my four email accounts and hitting delete, delete, delete, delete, I had a thought. I could clean this up.

Every day, I feel overwhelmed by all of the emails that seep into my inbox. I’m equally overwhelmed by the idea of doing something about it. But I decided that as I enter into 2021, I don’t want one gazillion unwanted emails to deal with every day.

Here is what I’m going to do: For every email that I want to simply delete, I am going to take an extra moment to open the email, fast forward to the bottom of the page and hit ‘unsubscribe.’

So, what will I clean up for a fresher start to 2021?

#1: Unsubscribe to unwanted emails.

What else?

I don’t blame Covid for cluttered drawers and closets, but on top of all of the Covid-related stressors mentioned above, that last thing any of us need is the ping of stress we may feel when we open a cluttered drawer.

I won’t take full credit for putting my hand up for decluttering. In some of my various challenges and courses designed to help women live their lives with a SPARK, decluttering is the #1 most frequently chosen clean-up challenge. I’m going to follow suit.

My list grows:
#1: Unsubscribe to 10 – 15 unwanted emails per day. (time required: 5 minutes)
#2: Clean out one drawer in my house per day (time required: 5 – 10 minutes)

Two more things that many women in the Women Who Spark community are dedicating themselves to related to cleaning up their fitness and their health. Commitment to movement and commitment to cutting back on sugar are two common choices. Since my workout routine blew up when my gym closed—and I haven’t mustered up my discipline to return—I’ve started to clean up this area by committing to 20 minutes of daily yoga.

My list rounds out at:

#1: Unsubscribe to 10 – 15 unwanted emails per day. (time required: 5 minutes)
#2: Clean out one drawer in my house per day (time required: 5 – 10 minutes)
#3: Do yoga for 20 minutes every morning. It’s the first thing I do.

What about you? What would you like to add to your list? What can you do to take back some of the control that you’ve lost during the past nine months? What will you clean up for a fresh start in 2021?
